ATTORNEY ROBERT LEE SCOTT
He is licensed to practice in both North Carolina and Illinois. His professional skills and educational background have emphasized both written and verbal communication. He received his undergraduate degree with additional graduate work in English from Roosevelt University prior to entering law school at Indiana University at Bloomington.
Most recently, while developing Client First Law, he has been in private practice: working on a variety of entrepreneurial ventures, participating in discovery projects involving issues associated with financial institutions, communication companies, and pharmaceutical firms utilizing the Relativity review platform; he has also taught criminal justice at North Carolina A & T State University.Prior to that he served four years as the managing attorney for The O’Brien Law Firm, HUD’s North Carolina Closing Agent where he:
- Directed the legal affairs of 15 staff persons in conducting over 250 real estate closings a month throughout the state.
- Supervised the work of a staff of attorneys, title abstractors and paralegals.
- Coordinated a network of real estate brokers, financial institutions, county recorders, and title companies through the closing process.
- Coordinated document preparation, supervised title searches, prepared title letters and final title abstracts, established a quality control system and complaint reporting system, performed cash and finance closings, and administered an educational program for first time home buyers.
During the initial phase of his career, he learned the normative legal skills of law firm, government, and business practice. These include data gathering and evaluation in preparation for operational advice for decision making. The second phase includes experience with both the mechanics of the real estate closing process, mortgage work out procedures and financial proforma development for mortgage funding. He next acquired litigation and adjudication experience which enhanced his abilities and judgment. These skills were acquired in a balance of legal practice experiences: law firm, government, and private practices, emphasizing both business and the public sector.
Prior to entering the field of law, Robert was a research associate for the University of Chicago’s Center for Studies in Criminal Justice, and a senior research associate performing program evaluation for social welfare programs for the City of Chicago’s Committee on Urban Opportunity. He also served as an adjunct professor in criminal justice for the City colleges of Chicago.
Robert began his law career as an associate with the Chicago Law firm of Ross, Hardies.He drafted zoning ordinance provisions for local municipalities. He alsowas an investigator and contributing writer for a land development feasibility study for a major savings and loan company and department store.
He continued his law career as a real estate attorney for McDonald’s Corporation, where he acquired land for McDonald restaurants. He further enhanced his career with Homart Development Company in shopping center development, and later as a consultant with American Savings and Loan of California where he negotiated defaulted loan workout agreements. He subsequently drafted and negotiated construction contracts for the development of a marine mammal park for Chin and Hensolt, a structural engineering firm, in San Francisco.
Robert returned to Chicago to become Senior counsel for the Chicago Housing Authority (CHA). He was in charge of Chicago’s scattered site housing development program financed through HUD’s Section 8 program. Then, as Solo practitioner he concentrated in real estate: closings, financing, leasing, land use, and zoning. He has a background in corporate law, construction, workers compensation, criminal law, administrative law and litigation.
When Robert moved his family from Chicago to his wife’s hometown of Greensboro in June, 1996 to assist her family in taking care of their mother following her father’s death, he continued to commute to Chicago for his law practice. During this time in Greensboro Robert helped to establish and incorporate the South East Economic Developments (SEEDS). He also served on the East Market Street Development Corporation Advisory Board, advising the Development Corporation on issues confronting the corridor development adjacent to North Carolina A&T University.
Beginning in 2004, Robert curtailed his Chicago law practice and concentrated on taking the bar exam in North Carolina. He passed the bar exam in February, 2005.
